What's Better Than Wealth?

Updated: Jul 20

Proverbs 22:1-4 says “A good name is to be chosen, rather than great riches and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor meet, the Lord is the maker of them all. The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches, and honor and life.”

These are wonderful principles to dive into. You know, it’s certainly easier said than done to develop a mindset of being more concerned with your reputation than your riches. But the reality is that your reputation is far more valuable than your wealth. When we allow our reputation to slip, our resources start to drain away.

Let’s clarify a bit. We all know plenty of people with a poor reputation and great wealth. But the idea we’re getting at here is that your name is worth far more than your money. These verses in Proverbs teach us that investing in eternity is what matters. You can’t carry any of your wealth with you.

When you’re on your deathbed, I guarantee you that you won’t be concerned about why you didn’t accumulate more stuff in life. The verse also talks about looking ahead to danger and creating a plan for when life goes sour. A wise man looks ahead and sees the warning signs and makes adjustments in his life to avoid them. A fool will ignore the warnings and instead, dive into danger.

If you really want riches, to be honored and to have a great life, then you need two things. First, fear God above all else. That’s a core principle at Lord and Richards. Number two, humble yourself before Him. Learn how to say “Lord, I’m sorry. I don’t know what the answers are. I don’t know what the path is ahead, but I’m going to ask you to guide me.” These are key prayers for someone that eventually comes into true riches, honor and a wonderful life.

Having a life where you can truly look back and say, “everything I did, I did to the best of my ability to honor God, treat people right, show genuine love and concern for others and put myself last.” That’s the exact opposite of what we’re typically taught about riches and living the good life, right? Why don’t we put those words into action? It’s our human nature to put ourselves first. A good name means that you put God and others first and things that the world values last.

I’m meeting people like you every single day who are concerned about the impact of events out of their control around this world. It makes us a little fearful, doesn’t it? Our team comes alongside you and builds a plan that allows you to live financially free and withstand the volatility of the markets.
